A small factoid crossed my path today, one I haven’t
validated but have no reason to challenge. I heard that Oklahoma City now has a
higher per capita concentration of gays and lesbians than San Francisco. That
sounded pretty strange to me, didn’t make much sense at all. Why would that
have happened? You’d think the LGBT folk would migrate to where they were more
accepted. OKC and the local redneck regimes just really are not all that
enlightened and tolerant. Why would the LGBT folk stay in, or migrate to, where
they’re really, really not wanted?
From what I’ve seen, of the folks whose ability to reproduce
is compromised by their lifestyle, there’s a very distinct polarity to be seen
among them: those who are at peace with themselves on the subject and those who
are not.
Those who are not seem to focus more on the social
consequences of their lifestyle than on the personal-psychological consequences
of identifying as LGBT. They focus on
the social elements and shy away from dealing with their own personal sterility.
Procreation, the instinct to reproduce, is a primal instinct
down at the bottom of the hierarchy and will in some degree or another, in some
manner or another, influence every life. Even inverted into a loathing of the
idea it is still the same instinct, just running inverted ( as a pertinent
note: adoption is a social function, noble and good, but still social rather
than personal… yes, you might nurture and mold that child, but still, it is
someone else’s genetics represented into the future, not your own).
Soooo… how does the above mentioned dragon bait help explain
a strangely high concentration of the LGBT folk in a region notorious for its’ intolerance? Rather simple, really.
That segment of the LGBT folk who are not at peace with the
idea of their own sterility genuinely need the bigotries and the biases, the
slurs and the body slams of the primitive and the profane directed against
their kind of people… as the counterbalance and distraction required to avoid
dealing square up with the factual consequences of being a member of that
community in the first place.
Of course, the flip side of the whole sad sordid affair is
this: the rednecks need the LGBT bunch almost as bad as the LGBT folk need the
rednecks: if there’s no queers to hate how in the world are we going to certify
our allegiance to the primitive culture to which we belong? They could, but really can’t afford, to exterminate the
LGBT folk, not without putting themselves at heavy risk for the same thing kinksters
are scared of: seeing themselves in a mirror they can’t get away from.
People. Damn. Give me
a hatful of hot nitro glycerin, I know what to do with that: get it to 38
degrees Fahrenheit and then do not drop it. But people? People are tricky, and
twice as explosive.
